(TRADE DEADLINE SPECIAL) Ten players; the sellers might not be able to trade

There are some teams that want to get rid of some less than desirable contracts and players. The sellers especially will become more and more desperate as the deadline goes on to get rid of some on these players to the extent they'll be willing to eat some salary.
Olli Jokinen
Lets be honest. When the Leafs obtained Olli Jokinen a few weeks back; neither the team nor player was thrilled. If it is 2:50 pm and the vet is still a Leaf; look for the team to make it known they'll eat 50% of his salary. If not before that is when the Islanders, Blues or Canucks might bite on the trade.
Trio of Yotes
Arizona is hoping for a trade deadline miracle and hopes the buyers bite on either David Moss, BJ Crombeen and/or Martin Erat. The rebuilding Yotes have ZERO interest is keeping these three around.
Weber, Meszaros and/or Benoit
In the offsesason the Sabres brought in Meszaros and Benoit as warm bodies to get the to the salary cap floor. Just as much as the Yotes want the previous three; the chances of the two vets coming back next year is the same of them resigning Zenon Konopka.... just not gonna happen. Buffalo will take any draft pick for the turnover machine Mike Weber. He would be a perfect #7 de-man; only problem his cap hit is 1.666 million.
Flyers beyond desperate
The Flyers have some bad contracts on some aging veterans. Earlier Sunday they were hoping teams like Edmonton would bite on a package of Braydon Coburn & Vincent Lecavalier. The lowly Oilers even said no thank you. I would venture to guess that at this time they'd offer to eat 50% of the following contracts; Lecavalier (3 yrs left @4.5 million), Andrew Macdonald (5 yrs 5 million), Luke Schenn (1 yr @3.6 million) or RJ Umberger (2 yrs @4.6 million). Why do they need to free salary you ask? Team superstar Jakub Voracek is a UFA at the end of next season and would be looking at 7 million+ compared to him 4.1 salary currently.

A few teams are done, Caps still to tinker?

We're 6 hours before the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline. Some teams have made their moves; buyers have bought inching themselves closer to contention; while the sellers have sold some but not all assets as of yet.
Consider two teams done
Barring a minor league depth move two teams are likely considered done. The New York Rangers made a trio of trades Sunday; obtaining Keith Yandle, Chris Summers James Sheppard while moving out John Moore and Lee Stempniak. Now considered one of the top teams in the East; the Rangers are deep in every position.
The other team very likely done is the Winnpeg Jets. I challenged the teams general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff a few weeks back and he's passed with flying colors http://corbyshockeycentral.blogspot.ca/2015/02/will-chevy-make-moves-this-year-around.html. In a matter of weeks the Jets have added the much needed depth up front; adding Drew Stafford, Jiri Tlusty and Stempniak. a large upgrade compared to Galiardi and Peluso.
Not going to do much
A few times have done their shopping already; and might make a few minor moves at best. Consider Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Vancouver, Nashville and Chicago in that boat. Those teams are up against the cap or at or near their set budget.
Are Caps done; thinking about tinkering
The Caps might be content but know themselves their not the favorite to win the East. They have two veteran forwards they might consider moving due to their lack of consistency. Both Jason Chimera and Brooks Laich have been on the fourth line lately; and were bumped further down the depth cart after they acquired Curtis Glencross. If the price was right both in acquiring/salary they'd like to add a top six forward and one who could play with Ovi & Backstrom. For them to get that player; Chimera or Laich would need to move on.

(TRADE DEADLINE SPECIAL) JVR to Boston; are the Blues for real; Flyers-Lightning deal

--- All of the obvious sellers (Coyotes, Sabres, Oilers and Leafs) might be intrigued by Blues hold out Vladmair Sobotka; who signed a free agent contract in KHL last year.
--- The Leafs can retain one more salary if they wish. If they do not do so with Lupul or Phaneuf look for team to voluntarily do so with Olli Jokinen at the last minute.
--- The Bruins are seeking a power forward winger, but have not done so as of yet. I think the B's might turn to JVR of the Leafs. A very economical 4.25 cap hit. Would they move a 1rst rounder + Niklas Svedberg to do it though?
--- Lots of "experts" still like the St. Louis Blues to come out of the West. Two reasons I feel the opposite; 1> ZERO Stanley Cup rings on the team (players not coaches) no proven winners that suite up every night; and say what you want that means allot. 2> Their goaltending is good but no one can say it's great.
--- I woke up this morning at 5:13 am. To my shock that the Flyers grabbed Radko Gudas a 1rst  & 3rd rounder for Braydon Coburn.... Wow not to sure what Lightning are thinking; I love and I mean love Gudas. All I can say is this; if Sidney Crosby had nightmares before it will get allot worse now. Coburn in my honest opinion is a #3-4 defenseman; not an impact d-man last time I checked.

(Trade deadline Special) Blues, Caps, Flyers have salary that can be moved.

There are plenty of teams that would love to make all sorts of moves at this year’s trade deadline.  The majority of which just don’t have the cap space to get that impact player they want and/or need. There are some players on those teams that are not 100% unmovable.
Blues & Berglund
The Blues have thrown Patrick Berglund’s name out as far as being available. The big 6’3 Swede has slowed down over the years from a offensive standpoint. For five straight years he’s gone down in goals (22,19,17,14 and 7) he does have 2 years remaining at 3.7 million. The upside if anything is he’s only 26 years old.
Call it a hunch, but I suspect a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs would take that type of a contract on. Assuming the Blues would be interested in a Joffrey Lupul; and if the Leafs were willing to eat 500k of the salary; for Berglund and a 2nd rounder; that would be a fair move. Blues add more depth on wing; get rid of a heavy contract the Leafs get younger and get bigger up the middle.
Other sellers who might be intrigued by Berglund would be Arizona. Yotes general manager Don Maloney made it clear he wasn't closing the door on taking term back in a trade.  Edmonton would be crazy not to look at Berglund, might we see a Berglund straight up for Jeff Petry?
Jason Chimera?
There are lots of reports of the Capitals going hard after Flames Curtis Glencross. One might assume that veteran Jason Chimera would be in the trade or be moved elsewhere. Glencross and Chimera are very similar, with the Flame winger being younger and having more offensive upside. Lately Chimera has been in/out of the lineup, which indicates that he has become expendable and he has 1 year left at 2 million (decent cap hit).
Flyers & 2 blue liners
With the recent re-signing of Nick Schultz by the Flyers it added some questions about cap space and where other blueliners fit in. At this point it’s safe to assume the Flyers regret the five year 5 million dollar contract given to Andrew MacDonald. He’s clearly in the dog house of coach Craig Berbue; to the point where he’s often been a healthy scratch in the month of February. If the Flyers GM Ron Hextall called the Isles GM Garth Snow and said (we’ll give you Macdonald and eat 50% of his salary); the Islanders would give it some consideration.

Other re-guards the Flyers might move is Niklas Grossman, the big nasty defenseman has one year remaining at 3.5 million; but has been often injured. That would be plan B with Macdonald being plan A.

(Trade deadline special) Will first rounders be moved at the deadline?

A report surfaced last week saying there was not any 1rst rounder’s available at this year’s trade deadline day? If that were to be the case it would be for a few reasons.
1>     Some sellers are playing a game of chicken with the sellers in hopes prices will drop. As an example; Habs played chicken with Isles last year at the deadline; Garth Snow blinked with 15-20 mins left and the Habs got Vanek got cheap (marginal prospect + 2nd rounder). The sellers know for a fact Chris Stewart, Jeff Petry and Andrej Sekara will be traded; they hope like them, no other team’s steps up and pays the price.
2>     Serious contenders in both East/West sometimes don’t react until one of the teams neck and neck with them makes a bold move, forcing them to react themselves.  If the Isles acquire Lupul and Polak from the Leafs; (at the deadline) within minutes the Pens, Rangers, Capitals might become more desperate where a prospect or draft pick not available before all of a sudden is included.
3>     The 3rd reasons first rounders has not been made available some of the rentals are just quite clearly not worth it. Petry, Zdynek Michalek, and Marek Zidlicky are not difference makers so they at no time are worth the cost.
Need to know
At this time Pittsburgh, Nashville, Islanders, Rangers and Blues DO NOT have a 1rst rounder for this year’s draft. Teams likely if any to move a first rounder would be Tampa Bay (have 2), Anaheim and Capitals .

Leafs wanting to recover picks willing to eat salary

A few things Leafs Nation need to know going into next Monday's trade deadline. They are looking to get one or more 2nd round picks. Why? Because they currently have no 2nd round picks in the upcoming draft.
The Leafs can retain two more contracts between now and June 30. On July 1 that goes up to three contracts (Carl Gunnarsson off the books). If they had a choice they'd like to moved David Clarkson and retain some of his salary (maybe as much as 2 million per year. But we all know the chances of that are slim to none. Another option is if there are no takers for Jokinen the Leafs can eat some salary to lessen the blow (as he like Gunnarsson is a UFA at year’s end)

Dave Nonis might do the “Brian Burke” next Monday. He might take on a bad expiring contract and get a prospect/pick back with that contract. In other words do another Cody Franson/Matthew Lombardi trade of a few years ago.

(Trade deadline special) Five prospects the sellers might want from buyers

We’re inching closer and closer to the NHL trade deadline; as more games are played it’s becoming very clear of who will buying and who will become sellers. What we’re going to do is go over some prospects who could be moved in some of these buyers/seller trades. That being said we’re not going to discuss the top prospect of these teams who have no chance of being traded. The following prospects are close to being NHL ready and could be had by sellers.

Anaheim Ducks
It’s no secret the Ducks the richest prospect pool in the NHL. I still am amazed that Anaheim did not give that much up for Ryan Kesler; meaning a top prospect being Etem, Smith-Pelly, Vatanen, Lindholm, Gibson, Ritchie, Rakell, Theodore or Silfverberg.
Now according to the NHL’s top insiders, the Ducks were looking to upgrade before Beleskey & Vatanen got injured for the month; now they are in full force for upgrades.  How long can they go with not including any of those top prospects. The other issue; they have limited draft picks for the 2015 draft. They have their 1st & 2nd rounder, they also have the Oilers & Canucks 3rd rounders & their 6th round pick.
That is where a  Josh Manson might come into the equation. The sixth round pick from 2011, is not quite as nasty as his dad Dave but he is close.  He has shown allot of poise for being thrown into the fire earlier this season. In his 2nd pro season the 23-year-old in close to being NHL ready; his projection would be a 4-6 defenseman. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau if a fan of this rookie; but unless the Ducks part with one of their prime assets; Manson might be sacrificed.

Calgary Flames
Like the Ducks; there is no chance the Flames will sacrifice any of their top prospects or picks to get better at the deadline. Future Flames like Mark Jankowski, Michael Ferland, Emile Poirier, Morgan Klimchuk, Markus Granlund, Josh Jooris, Tyler Wotherspoon plus others are absolute non starters. The two guys I would be after that the Flames might be more opened minded about would be forward David Wolf & defenseman Keegan Kanzig.
Kanzig could be an absolute beast. At 6’7, 241 pounds he is not a gentle giant and he is no dummy or a goon. “We thought he understood the game very well and that he had high character, high intangibles,” said Tod Button the Flames director of amateur scouting.
Wolf a German native; was signed from the Hamburg Freezers in the German league. He is not your typical European; Wolf is a big nasty burly forward at 6’3 216 pounder who is not afraid to scrap. He could very easily develop into a 3rd line banger and crasher.

LA Kings
Get ready for some rolling eyes; but if I were doing business at the deadline with the Kings on a depth move. Meaning trading the Kings a 5-6 de-man or a 3rd line forward; the King asset I’d want back is Oscar Moller. The former first rounder should have never played with in LA this early in his career. He has spent 3 years in Sweden, and this year in the KHL; but there is no doubt he’d be an ok player in the NHL: maybe even a 2nd liner with time. He would be a reasonable cap hit; of no more than 1.2 million per season.
The Kings also have some draft picks that might be obtained in a deadline deal. The Kings have their first rounder with (2) 2nd rounders with the rest of their picks as well.

 Winnipeg Jets
The Jets have come to the realization that to them Alexander Burmistrov is useless. Next to Evander Kane he'd be the next player not welcome to come back to Winnipeg. With the Jets never so close to the playoffs; it is time to move this asset and make something out of it. Look for the Sabres, Devils or Coyotes to be most intrigued by him, especially if he'd commit to the NHL ahead of time. The other option in a deal would be a conditional pick in case the Russian stays in the KHL.

If the Bruins were to sell; Subban not even close

After last nights disastrous NHL debut for Boston Bruins goalie Malcom Subban; it was painfully obvious he's nowhere being ready prime-time. He made 3 saves in the first; but in 2nd period (in the first four minutes) he gave up three goals on three shots. Every single goal was of the weak variety.
I'm sure I'm not the only one asking myself what the hell was he doing starting in the first place? Niklas Svedberg the B's backup goalie all year started February 10th  and had a rough first period giving up 3 goals on 10 shots but the game before he shutout the New Jersey Devils.
Some reports suggest the Bruins won't be selling; but to what extent are they going to be buying? I had suggested earlier in the week the sellers would want Svedberg; maybe the Bruins are being more opened minded about it then we thought and furthermore be looking to obtain a veteran backup. http://corbyshockeycentral.blogspot.ca/2015/02/trade-deadline-special-two-goalies.html

Carl Soderberg
An example on where the Bruins might on the fence to buy/sell is 3rd line center Carl Soderberg is a UFA at years end. He's making a shade over one million per year; I'd suggest he's looking for 3.5 to 4 million per season in free agency. Do the Bruins try and get assets for him; or hope he takes a hometown discount before July 1. With Rielly Smith, Torey Krug and Dougie Hamilton due to become RFA's it's doubtful the B's would have enough cap space for him.
If and only if
Hypothetically if the Bruins decided when it's all said and done to become sellers trust me; it would change this upcoming trade deadline on March 2. If they decided to move Soderberg, Lucic, Chara, Seidenberg, Mcquiad, Campbell and Eriksson they could be set for many years to come just with the first rounders/prospects they could get. We all know there is a small percentage of that happening, but if it where to happen hot dam March 2 would be must see tv.

(Trade deadline Special) Sellers to get plenty of 3rd rounders

With trade deadline one week away; the one word we’re hearing just as must as buyer or seller is third round draft pick. Let’s look at some of the players who are most likely going to move for a 3rd rounder or more.
Two Panthers
Likely by Monday we will see Florida veteran Sean Bergenheim moved to a buyer for a 3rd rounder and/or a defenseman. The former Islander is better served as a 3rd liner; but can play the odd game on the 2nd line. There are 2 reasons teams like Montreal, Winnipeg, Islanders, Rangers are lining up for his services. He is consistent in regards to scoring goals; only once in the last five years does he have less than 14 goals. The biggest reason why teams love him; 12 goals in 23 playoff games; he steps things up when it matters most.
There are not as many teams lining up for Tomas Fleischmann; who has struggled offensively the last two years only because he’s not getting consistent minutes on the top two lines. The former Capital could help a few different teams. He might go well with Malkin in Pittsburgh, same goes in Dallas whether it be with Benn or Spezza on the Stars first or second line.
My personal belief is Bergenheim will cost more than a 3rd; I think he will go for a 2nd rounder or a roster player who can help Panthers get to the post season.

Jiri Tlusty
Another player close to Fleischmann is Carolina’s Jiri Tlusty. Neither are going to be a savior; but both can play 2nd line minutes if the linemates and situation is right. The one benefit of Tlusty is his salary is 1 million less at 2.950. The one downside is with the Hurricanes he has played the majority of his time with Eric Stall; wherever he moves to a secondary role with lesser known center.
Defenseman
There are eight or nine teams looking for one last defenseman before the deadline. We will see Petry, Polak, Hejda, Sekara and Michalek traded before or on March 2. There are some second tier defenseman who will go for about a 3rd rounder to those teams that miss out.

New Jersey’s Marek Zidlicky could be had, the UFA can still help any struggling powerplay and at times can play top four minutes.  Longtime Ottawa Senator Chris Phillips is on the back nine of his career; he is a decent cap hit of 2.5 million.

(Trade deadline Special) Are the Jackets sellers?

Some reports have Columbus being interested ib moving pending RFA Matt Calvert. Don't believe everything you read especially in this case. Why would Columbus get rid of his 9 goals; while keeping less productive players? This kid has decent speed, is a two way player and is very tough for being a smaller sized player. For a team that will look to rebound next year they need depth such as Calvert who is a top nine forward.
For some reason I do believe the Jackets might be shopping Cam Atkinson. There has been to many rumors out about youngster to downplay this rumor. I'd highly suggest the Jackets would demand at least a 2nd rounder or very decent prospect back. Atkinson very likely will score 20 goals for a 2nd straight season. Two back to back 20 goal seasons by the age of 25; that is allot of promise to give this early.
I'd look for Columbus to move a Mark Letestu, who in the off-season will be looking for close to 2 million a season. That price tag for them would be to high for someone who will never crack the top two lines. If the Jackets could move Jared Boll they just might; the long time enforcer has two years remaining at 1.7 million per year.
Blue line decisions
The Jackets have allot of defenseman, reasoning they had so many injuries earlier on they had no choice but to make trades. At this time they'd move veteran Jordan Leopold for anything, maybe even eat some of his salary. The 34 year-old has played three times in 2015; one in January, twice in February. Anyone looking to beef up their backend might look at acquiring Dalton Prout; like Leopld the 24-year-old has been sitting out quite a bit lately.

Jets thin up front; set on blueline

Good news then the worst news one could have expected; that for the Winnipeg Jets in regards to the injuries suffered the other night vs Edmonton. Yesterday Jets coach Paul Maurice said newly acquired Drew Stafford is day to day; which is somewhat of a relief for fans. Now to the bad news, 5th leading scorer Mathieu Perrault is likely out until the playoffs with a lower body injury. Often injured Jets forward Matt Halischuk is said to be ready within 2 weeks from his current injury.
In the short term the Jets have recalled European forward Carl Klingberg from the AHL. He might just might start on the 2nd line with Mark Scheifele & Drew Stafford. Or he could be spotted on the 3rd or 4th line as well. I’d suggest try a period or two with the 2nd line; see what if any offense he can create.
No time to waste
The Jets are in a decent spot; but by no means safe and sound. They are four points up on the 9th place team and only five points behind in the Central. But and this is a huge but; moving forward teams in which the Jets are in a playoff race with  are playing each other most nights til the end of the month; which means one if not both teams are guaranteed to get points on most nights.
The 4th line
The fourth line is a good energy line; good for banging, crashing…. But we know Maurice doesn't trust them 5 on 5 100% and as a line they have FOUR goals all year. That it’s must improve going forward.
For the record I like Anthony Peluso; think he could be the next Darren McCarty-Randy Mckay type player. They started out an enforcer turned out to be a decent third liner. But here in the now and present; he should not be playing against the Nashville’s or the Detroit’s he serves no purpose in those games and takes needless minors only in those games.
With the exception of being a decent penalty killer; the same can be said TJ Galiardi. He has been put on waivers twice without being claimed. He has 1 goal in 36 games and is -8. Jim Slater I think is a perfect 4th line center; better than average penalty killer, great on faceoff’s and will scrap when asked to. That is where Halischuk would come in handy against more skilled teams.
Plenty of d-man but…..
The one good thing for the Jets; their current blue line is the best it has ever been hands down bar none in franchise history.  Think of it this way; the Hawks & Kings previous cup winners had a great defense they also have/had 3 defensive minded; 3 offensive minded defenseman. The Jets have are very close to that ratio;  and when Jay Harrison, Adam Pardy are your 7th & 8th in the depth chart that is not a bad thing.
Now the negative; before the injury to Perreault they were very thin up front.  Just my opinion but ownership must buck up and give Cheveldayoff the green light to add more salary; nothing substantial but he must  ensure they give the players and its fans the best chance of success.
At this time of the year there are plenty of players who could be had for close to nothing. Those players are strictly depth forwards. http://corbyshockeycentral.blogspot.ca/2015/02/cost-for-winnik-high-7-depth-players.html A player like Arizona’s David Moss would be useful against the Wings/Preds; and would help the middle of the road PK; someone like that would cost the team a 6-7th rounder. On the other hand one can get a decent top nine forward for a 2nd to a 3rd round pick; and it appears we could have plenty of selection (lots of sellers).
Need more help on the farm
In past seasons the Jets had players like Aaron Gagnon, Eric O’Dell when they were called upon they chipped in 3-4 goals. That is exactly what they need from Klingberg, a player that can be relied on to contribute offensively and unfortunately Patrice Cormier is not the answer. Past Klingberg, O’Dell and maybe John Albert; there is no one else on the farm that can remotely help. Look for the Jets to make some “minor league deals” to add more depth.

(Trade deadline special) The two goalies sellers want badly

The Boston Bruins & Pittsburgh Penguins have allot in common nowadays. They’re both struggling in different ways; both teams have very little to no cap space.  Currently the B’s can only bring in a 2 million player; which look at their needs won’t do them much good. The Pens on the other hand is much worse. They have to move someone out of equal salary; so if they acquire anyone. Example if the Pens got Daniel Winnik from Toronto; they need to move out a 1.2 million salary. With this being the case one can see why the Pens won’t be doing anything major at the deadline.
Sellers will be asking for?
For the positive both teams have a goaltender that sellers want to get their hands on.
Bruins rookie Niklas Svedberg has been solid in 13 games this year; but might be pushed out of Beantown by prospect Malcolm Subban. Now if the B’s were to move the 25-year-old Swede; it would be in a part of an actual hockey trade; not a rental situation. The other type of place where he could be moved is if the seller (Oilers, Leafs, Sabres or Coyotes) take on salary that the Bruins want to get rid of in the worst way in order to make another move;  that type of a deal would likely be made in the off-season.
Jeff Zatkoff could be dangled to the sellers at the trade deadline. The 27 year old had decent numbers in Pittsburgh last year with a 2.61 g.a.a & 912%. He was forced to the AHL when the Pens inked Thomas Greiss in the off-season. His numbers in the AHL are unreal; 2.24 g.a.a & 911%.
If I were in charge of the Sabres, Oilers or Yotes I’d demand he be included in any trade and I would not budge. In Pittsburgh’s situation they might replace Greiss with Zatkoff based on performance plus also for cap purposes (assuming someone wants Greiss).

Bruins about to be outside looking in; options not a plenty

Let’s face the fact. The Boston Bruins have been the beasts of the East for a long time; both physically and in the standings as well. Nowadays that without question cannot be said. The team that prided themselves on being the Big Bad Bruins is not as much anymore.  The B’s are 22nd for goals per game; 13th in fights and 9th in goals against which is unlike the Bruins.
There are very few teams that are handcuffed from a salary cap perspective as bad as the Bruins; both this year and moving forward. They’re looking for some much needed help on the wing, someone who can provide them toughness and at the same time they’d like to add another top 4 defenseman.
Like other teams in the NHL teams are after Buffalo’s Chris Stewart, when it’s all said and done he’s what the Bruins are after. The Sabres want a 2nd rounder + an above average prospect. Again two problems Stewart makes 4.2 million; the Bruins can only afford a 2 million dollar contract. So to get any player of substance they’re removing one or two players to do so.
When I look at the Bruins it’s obvious they need that top line forward; but at the same time they need to find some depth for the 3rd/4th lines. The B’s 3rd line has scored 29 goals (Soderberg, Eriksson & Kelly); 4th line 6 goals. And when you’re leading scorer has 38 points in 55 games that’s not allot of goals you’re scoring.
Who leaves to get improvements?
Again for Bruins to bring anyone in; other  with salary needs to leave.
1>     Gregory Campbell; unlikely he will go but at the same time the 4th liner is making 1.6 million and has scored 3 times all year.  He is a player other teams with cap space would acquire without thinking twice.
2>     Adam Mcquaid; like Campbell this would be a last minute move that the Bruins don’t want to make. But like Campbell he’s a UFA at year’s end making 1.56 million; sellers like Edmonton, Arizona even Toronto would like to gamble with this mean d-man.
3>     Daniel Paille; like Campbell his cap hit of 1.3 million is a steep one for a player who has scored one goal all season. A seller could take Paille on and flip him after; being he as well is a UFA on July 1.
4>     Matt Bartkowski finally could be moved. His name has been mentioned deadline after deadline. Realistically 1.25 million is a big cap hit for any 7th defenseman but especially one against the cap like the Bruin. His value over the years is not as high as it once was; he could be part of the package if the B’s get Stewart from Buffalo.
5>     Dennis Seidenberg; the veteran 33 year old d-man has 3 years remaining at 4 million per year. Most teams would like him; but it’s the term that they would not want, being Seidenberg has been prone to injuries. He’s arguably a top 2-3 defenseman but Chara would not be his partner as well.
6>     Loui Eriksson is not your prototypical Boston Bruin. He is still a top six forward with a good nose to the net while being defensively responsible. He also has salary of 4.5 and that is a big salary for some who plays on the Bruins 3rd line.
With Eriksson & Seidenberg; this is my mind would be an off-season deal. They need those players to get into the playoffs. The sellers will stay clear of those two, being there age and term going forward

Penguins now in wildcard spot, Crosby fighting and penalties costing them

When was the last the Pittsburgh Penguins were in danger of finishing in a wild card spot? After last night loss to Columbus and Tuesday's third period penalty parade; they lost 3-1 to the Washington Capitals; they are 4th in the Atlantic and in the wildcard spot.
And for you that think they'll get right back in the think of things ASAP; maybe not. The Rangers have Buffalo tonight and Columbus on Sunday. The Caps have the Islanders and Flyers in a back to back set, Saturday-Sunday. The Pens on the other hand get St. Louis on the road.
Crosby fights & bullying the Caps?
Thursday night was the first time Sidney Crosby fought since April 15, 2012; yet another sign the Penguins are not themselves.
Two nights earlier the Penguins and its fans were disgusted when Alex Ovechkin was not called for a penalty after slashing Kris Letang, the defenseman then lost his balance crashing into the boards. Off the ensuing faceoff two Pens went immediately to Ovi cross-checking him in the arm. Same could be said one faceoff later where the Pens fourth line when after the Caps before the puck was dropped.
In total Pittsburgh was short handed four times in the 3rd period; eventually giving up the game winning goal with just 4 minutes left. But I will say this; the 3rd penalty on Chris Kunitz for boarding was not a great call.
Veteran refs Kevin Pollock & Justin St. Pierre were very fortunate that at no time did this get to be a 3 or 4 goal game. They let allot of shenanigans go early in the 3rd and it could have blew up at anytime if it wasn't such a close game.
Pens toughness + 4th line
In total the Penguins 4th line in the 3rd period they took 26 PIMS; two minors that led to a powerplays with 2 misconducts. Steve Downie absolutely bare none is the most undisciplined player in the NHL. Six players in the NHL have over 100 PIMS: Downie on the other hand has 187 for the season. He is tied for first with Winnipeg's Dustin Byfuglien with 36 minor penalties taken; the 3rd most in Dion Phaneuf with 30.
The reasoning to bring in Downie was to be semi-bodyguard for Crosby, Malkin & Letang. I don't know to many that would be scared of the former Av, Flyer and Lightning forward, so this experiment is costing the Penguins with needless penalties. I tweeted out yesterday no playoff team would ever go near Downie, I suggested maybe one of the "tankers" who are trying to get McDavid.
If the Pens want someone who will watch the stars backs they need a Chris Neil or a Jared Boll type of players who can play but also do the job properly.

San Jose struggles again; where do they go from here?

It’s the same old same old. The best players are just that, but we’re not even in the playoffs and the San Jose Sharks are slowly falling apart. The team is near if not already in must win territory; but just in the last eight games they lost twice on home ice to of all teams Edmonton & Carolina.
Very safe to assume that if the Sharks manage to make the playoffs it could very well be last kick at the can for Sharks coach Todd McLellan and maybe even general manager Doug Wilson. For them to stay on the job yet another year they need to move onto the 3rd round; or look very good in losing in the 2nd round.
Getting into the two wildcards spots will in all likely hood include a quick first round exit against either Anaheim or Nashville. They need to get into the second or third place in the Pacific division, which based on the Sharks play plus others picking up their play won’t happen.
At the end of last year Alex Stalock looked to be taking over the starting job over veteran Antti Niemi. But come the post season Niemi got the meaningful starts and they of course blew a 3-0 over the Kings to lose in 7 games.  This year Niemi has started 44 of 58 games; which would indicate they're going to win/lose with him and not Stalock.
But the question needs to be asked are the Sharks content with their goaltending. Both netminders have a 2.61 & 2.68 g.a.a; which leaves them in the middle of the pack of goalies numbers.
Do they pull upgrade the goaltending before March 2?
Niemi is in the last year of his 4 year contract; and like the coach & GM another quick playoff exit means he's a goner. Do they wait for that to happen are do the make a move at or before the March 2 deadline.
A few goalies who would  be an upgrade on Stalock could be available. One being Carolina's Anton Khudobin; Ottawa's Craig Anderson, Toronto's Jonathan Bernier and if Minnesota falls out of the playoff picture Devon Dubynk.
A 2nd rounder + prospect if not maybe a little more would be required for Bernier, a 2nd would get Dubnyk (of the circumstances are right). Khudobin could  be had for a 3rd rounder; for Anderson you'd need a top prospect or a 1rst rounder.

Not loaded with assets
The fact remains this. If the Sharks are looking for any significant changes all the other will be inquiring into very few assets. The obvious trio of Pavelski, Couture & Burns would be who the other teams would be after. Without question that for San Jose is a non-starter; so what else could they do? They would be open to moving any draft pick but there first, most of their bottom six forwards (with the exception if Wingels) or 5-6-7 de-man would be open for conversion to be moved.
In his rookie season Tomas Hetrl had many experts thinking he was the next Jaromir Jagr; that was before he met Dustin Brown on Dec 19, 2013. Before the injury,  in 35 games he scored 15 goals with 25 points. This year in 56 games he’s got 10 goals 22 points.  Because of the huge decrease in numbers the value of him in regards to a trade has gone down as well
Same can be said for Matt Nieto; unlike Hertl; Nieto played mainly on the 3rd-4th line in his rookie season. His numbers were ok, scoring 10 times in 66 games; but this year his production is down slightly but there is not the progression they’d hope to see.
Sellers?
Two years ago the Sharks traded off a few vets who were set to become UFA’s. Could they do the same with Niemi or Scott Hannan, Andrew Desjardins and Tyler Kennedy? The least unlikely to move would be Niemi because it’s quite clear Stalock is not ready for prime time.

Cost for Winnik high; 7 depth players for cheap

The asking price for pending UFA veteran Daniel Winnik is a 2nd & 3rd round pick or a 2nd or 3rd with a decent prospect. That price alone should scare away any playoff team that doesn't consider themselves a contender. It's quite a large package for teams like Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, San Jose, even Boston who are more than one player away from doing damage.
Other than Colorado's Maxim Talbot, Winnik is rare on this years market. A solid third line veteran who is an elite penalty killer and also can provide size and some toughness for a team lacking any of the above.
Packaged deal?
Would the Leafs consider another packaged deal to move up to another first rounder pick? Whether it be Roman Polak & Winnik or Olli Jokinen with Winnik. If such a deal was an option those teams mentioned before would be out for sure; they would not want to part with a possible 12-14 overall pick for rentals. One would assume the Blues, Penguins, Lightning, Ducks might consider that form of a trade.
Last minute stop and shop?
Just like there are some buyers; we also have our fair share of sellers as well. I have come up of a list of seven players who could be had for almost nothing but maybe a 7th rounder when it's all said and done.
Phoenix's David Moss will likely go for cheap if not moved before the last hour of the deadline; he's had a tough season is Arizona but can still help the penalty kill if anything. Buffalo has two warm bodies up for grabs. Defenseman Andre Benoit has had a bad season compared to his 13-14 season in Colorado. Forward Matt Ellis is simply an AHL call up who can play 5-7 minutes on a 4th line basis only. Carolina's Brett Bellemore can play forward & defense and provided toughness as well.
The next 3 players could be had & the team trading that player would consider retaining 25-50% of the salary. Toronto's Stephane Robidas has two years remaining at 3 million; for a 38 year old that is a tough pill to swallow for some teams. Then we get to Ottawa's Colin Greening & Erik Condra; both players have been available for trade all year long so the likely hood of them going anywhere is low at best.

Jets lose Perreault & Stafford; will they look into Jokinen?

Some how some way the Winnipeg Jets keep pulling out points that at times look impossible. After the shootout win vs Edmonton they now have 70 points; 4 points behind the divisional rival Chicago Blackhawks (3rd in Central). More importantly the Jets now have a 5 point lead on the first wildcard and 7 points up on the Wild. So as of right now they’re fine, but by no means safe & sound.
Ill timed injury
In last nights win the Jets appear to have lose Mathieu Perreault who played 2 shifts and was seen walking out the building with a “walking boot”. So one would assume he’s out 2-4 weeks at a minimum. The team also lost recently acquired Drew Stafford to some form of an upper body injury; the extent of his injury is still unknown.
The Jets effort to get some help via trade is likely to be stepped up immediately. When you put two and two together; one thing to me makes sense. Assuming all was well between the two (dressing room, etc) ; would the Jets want to re-acquire veteran Olli Jokinen who was just traded to Toronto.  The cost for him would be cheap 5th to 7th rounder; and he would be a major upgrade compared to TJ Galiardi and Anthony Peluso.
Others like David Booth, Patrick Dwyer, Erik Condra etc would be cheaper than Jokinen (in acquiring not in salary); again would be an upgrade compared to Galiardi & Peluso. One potential roster move that will occur when the Jets upgrade is either waiving or trading Paul Postma who hasn’t played since Jan 8.
In the short term
One of three things will happen. 1> they move Dustin Byfuglien up front again from defense, which hurts there backend which has never looked better in Thrashers/Jets history than it does now. 2> Call up prospect Joel Armia from St. John’s which general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was discussing earlier last week.  If I were a betting man, which I am; I’d suggest the Jets bring Big Buff up front.  Jets coach Paul Maurice would trust him more than the rookie Armia who has played 1 game in the NHL. There could be a third option; a short term patch job; which would see John Albert or Patrice Cormier being recalled

Buyers vs Sellers; who plays who

There are five god awful teams this year in the NHL, all of which have dreams of drafting Connor McDavid with the first pick overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.  Arizona, Toronto, Buffalo, Carolina & Edmonton are plainly obvious sellers; some of those teams have been and will be accused of tanking. On the other hand we have teams doing whatever it takes to sneak into the playoffs. Three teams in the East (Flyers, Panthers & Bruins) are battling for the final Wild card berth. In the West there is a bigger logjam. The Flames, Kings, Sharks, Canucks, Jets & Stars are fighting for three spots within the playoffs.

 As of today
WPG 70 PTS ( 23 games remaining
VAN 67 PTS (25 games remaining)
CGY 67 PTS(23 games remaining)
SJ 66 PTS (24 games remaining)
LA 64 PTS (26 games remaining)
MIN 63 PTS (25 games remaining)
DAL 60 PTS (26 games remaining)

----------------------------------------------
Bos 64 PTS (26 games remaining)
FLO 60 (27 games remaining)
PHI  58 (26 games remaining)

Head to Head games
Those teams trying to get into the playoffs have some chances to put points in the bank. The following teams play the “tankers” a number of times; and to fair these teams should beat the tankers 8 times out if 10.

Bruins  5 games…. Panthers 5 games…. Flyers 6 games

Sharks  4 games.. Canucks 5 games.. Jets 2 game... Flames 3 games… Wild 4 games…. Kings 4 games… Dal 3 games
Games vs each other
Just as if not more important will be the head to head games; losing points against these teams will be the downfall to making the playoffs are not

Boston vs Flo-Phi 4 game; Phili vs Bos-Flo 1 game; Florida vs Bos-Phi 3 games

CGY vs others 6 games;  Dal vs others 6 games; LA vs others 8 games, Min vs others 5 games;  SJ vs others 7 games;  Van vs others 8 games; WPG vs others 7 games

Leafs complete first of many trades

Less than 72 hours after the Toronto Maple Leafs declared a full blown fire sale; they made their first out of many moves to start the rebuild. The Nashville Predators re-acquired both Cody Franson & Mike Santorelli in return the Leafs get a 2015 first round draft pick, prospect Brendan Leipsic and veteran Olli Jokinen. Despite being a very late first round pick; it's just as good as two mid round 2nd round picks, which was the original asking price for Franson & Santorelli who must be looking forward to getting to a contender.
Jokinen is said not to be thrilled with the trade for obvious reasons; has two weeks to show playoff contenders he's worth one more chance. I personally would be stunned if the Winnipeg Jets don't take a chance on him, he seemed to fit very well with them before signing with Nashville. The asking price would be very minimal, maybe a 5th or 6th rounder or depth forward Patrice Cormier.
Leipsic was the leading scorer two years in the WHL with the Portland Winter Hawks. Some experts call him the most annoying prospect in all of hockey.
Just the start of things to come
This should be the first of many moves to come; one would assume if any offer was made on David Booth, Stephane Robidas, David Clarkson or Jokinen the Leafs would pounce immediately. Daniel Winnik is likely to the next moved but the list of teams seem to be endless.

Stars season in jeopardy after Seguin injured

Late Friday night in your typical East vs West non-emotional game; with one cheap-shot the Western Conference playoff picture might have changed. Florida’s Dmintri Kulikov did his best Bryan Marchment impersonation on NHL star Tyler Seguin (who today was placed on IR) with a low bridge hit.
While the injury status is in the air about Seguin, TSN’s Bob Mckenzie is hearing 3-6 weeks. "It's a dirty shot,,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff after Friday’s win. "You end up taking your best player out. Not only out of the game, but he's taken him out of the lineup for a little bit.
Where to go from here?
The Dallas Stars is 3 points behind Calgary (2nd wildcard) but is also 1 point behind Minnesota & currently tied with the defending champions LA Kings. From bad to worse the not only lost Seguin but also lost top six forwards Ales Hemsky & Patrick Eaves.  The Stars do have some players in the minors for now that can patch things up but they are not long term solutions. Now does appear Hemsky’s injury is minor one he might be able to play through.
Unconfirmed but one must assume the Stars priority has gone from getting a top four defenseman to getting immediate assistance for the top six forwards. Do they go all out and go after a Chris Stewart, Antoine Vermette or a Joffrey Lupul; or obtain players that do not require as much in return  Michael Ryder, Martin Erat or Jiri Tlusty.
I suspect the Stars will not go all out and will go after one of the last three players named. They will then fully decide March 2 to become full buyers or become sellers. If they do sellers look for Cole, Horcoff, Enroth, Eaves to become available.

Hartman debuts, Kings unsure, Max Talbot

Tonight former first round pick Ryan Hartman makes his debut for the Chicago Blackhawks. This recall makes sense on multiply levels. While the Hawks have some size and toughness; a team loads of skill and speed could also use more nastiness. The question becomes this what is the real motive to the recall? Is it for him to have a look on the 4th line or are they showcasing him for teams interested in him? Only time will tell.

Talbot to become available
Teams seem to be endless that want Toronto’s of Daniel Winnik. The Leafs have set their sights on a 2nd round draft pick; which it is 50/50 whether they get that back in return.  One small problem the Leafs may have; other teams might switch there attention to another player very similar but one who has a Stanley Cup ring; Colorado’s Maxime Talbot. The ex -Penguin & Flyer has 1 year remaining on his contract, a cap hit of 1.750 million; but a base salary of 1 million. The Avalanche are now 8 points behind the 2nd wild card with 3 teams to jump past. I honestly see the Av’s getting a 2nd rounder maybe more before the Leafs getting the same.

Are the Kings buyers or sellers
Despite winning three in a row; Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi is on the fence on what direction to take the team. LA remains 3 points behind Calgary for the 2nd wild card spot. If the Kings remain close within 4-5 points they will become buyers; if they tail off they likely would become sellers (Stoll, Williams etc). They likely would wait until March 2 to despite on which approach. If they do become buyers look for them to be in on Franson, Yandle or Sekara; with some extra depth up front as well.

Sharks to look at Leafs for help in net?

Near the end of the 2013-14 season, the San Jose Sharks looked to be going in a different direction  with their goaltending.  Alex Stallock was getting important starts going down the stretch; but then the playoffs rolled around Anti Niemi once again got the key starts. This year despite exact numbers statically Niemi has started 42 games while Stallock has been in 14 games.
The question would be this; would general manager Doug Wilson & coach Todd McLellan risk there jobs with Niemi & Stallock again in the playoffs? That tandem has failed in the past 4 years, with Niemi going 19-20 or would they look outside for an improvement.
Could Sharks be one of teams interested in Toronto’s Jonathan Bernier either at the deadline or at the draft? One would assume the asking price would be a 2nd & 4th rounder or even a conditional 1rst rounder.  Bernier would without question be an upgrade on Stallock; with the jury being out on Niemi. The Finnish netminder who has won a Cup with Chicago is a UFA at years end; while Stallock has 1 yr remaining before becoming a UFA.
Reason why I mention Bernier; other than Anton Khudobin no other goalie of substance is available for a reasonable price (both required to obtain + salary). Bernier would be much improved in front of the Sharks better defensive setup compared to the Leafs.

I’m sure if Bernier was given a choice he’d rather be moved to a team that has a chance to be competitive compared to a rebuild from scratch with the Leafs.

Feb. 13 news and notes; Jets, Preds, Leafs, Sabres & Coyotes

Look for the Predators to make a move sooner rather than later for a defenseman. The 3rd pairing of Anthony Bitetto & Viktor Bartley played just over 13 minutes, mainly against  the Jets 4th line. Bartley didn't look great as had 2 minor penalties in the game vs Winnipeg.  Often during that contest that pairing got caught in there own end for long periods of time.  Nashville is will eventually obtain a rental defenseman; it’s whether to do it now or near the deadline.
It’s a distinct possibility that newly acquired Joel Armia gets recalled before the Jets play Detroit on Saturday night. Anthony Peluso could sit;  Peluso twice in the last 5 games has taken (2) minor penalties in a game and not of the good variety. TJ Galiaradi might be sent down to make room for Armia.
When the fire sale begins in Toronto; the Leafs might have to eat some of Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, David Clarkson or Joffrey Lupul’s contract to make them more desirable. From now until July 1; they can only only do that for twice. CBA rules say you can max out of 3 contracts being made by previous team; the Leafs are currently paying 200k of Carl Gunnarson’s contract.

Both Evander Kane and Martin Hanzal are out for the year with season ending surgery. It is no secret that both Buffalo and Arizona are going to be both sellers at the deadline. Both teams have placed both players on IR; but will not then on LTIR because they want both contracts counting against there cap.

Is the Leafs rebuild about to begin?

According to various reports President of the Toronto Maple Leafs Brendan Shanahan has gotten full permission from "higher ups" to start a full rebuild. Some of members Leafsnation wish this would have occurred 10 years ago If he goes through and strips it down and starts over with a complete rebuild where does he begin?
Dion Phanuef; I’m in the minority
Is he overpaid? Yes. But the beating and disrespect that Dion Phanuef gets to me is mind blowing.  He’s in the top 50 defenseman in the NHL; compared to the other better reguards in the league; they all have a reliable partner on the back end. Phaneuf’s partners over the year have been Carl Gunnarsson, Jake Gardnier and/or Cody Franson. My prime example is this; look at LA or Chicago; they have 1 offensive defenseman paired with a reliable stay at home de-man (through all of their pairs). Only reason why I’d say get rid of the captain is to save you the cap hit now. In the last 3-4 years of his contract it becomes harder to move.
Step 1; who do you keep
If this talk is true; the first and most obvious step is who do you want to keep going forward? Reports today suggest Nylander, Van Riemsdyk, Kadri, Rielly, Gardnier & Bernier.  I personally also keep Holland & Komarov; for many reasons; proven NHL depth and better than average penalty killers.
Other guys Leafs will look to build around; Connor Brown, a young 20-year-old AHL rookie 34 Pts; 46 GP. Josh Leivo has shown signs of being a decent NHLer, same could be said for Peter Granberg, Stuart Percy.
Step 2; Don’t tank it; but.....
Those who you believe will be a part of the future you play now. You do not want to wait to the pre-season the following season to evaluate who’s a keeper and who’s not. As an example; Granberg, Loov, Percy need extended games near the end of the season same goes up front Biggs, Gauthier, Nylander. Assuming Reimer is no longer part of the future you bring up either Antoine Bibeau and/or Chris Gibson and play them 3-4 games each. Just my opinion they should be the future netminders not Jonathan Bernier.
Step 3 Play the pending RFA’s
The Leafs have Seven RFA’s currently playing with the AHL Marlies.  Once the deadline is over and 5-7 contracts are moved out; bring up those RFA’s to determine if the Leafs should maintain services at year end. Example Kozun, Carrick, Mckegg, McWilliam, & Eric Knodel (all RFAs) bring them up for 5-10 games (or the rest of the season) if their play is not NHL quality you simply do not qualify them and move on.
Step 4; move expiring contracts
Assuming this is the case and a full rebuild is to start; I would do the following, trade any expiring contract or undesirable term in which you have ZERO interest in keeping (assuming they are movable.).

My asking prices would be (for the harder contracts to move)
Smith for 7th rounder
Booth for 6th rounder
Holzer for 6th rounder
Reimer for 4 or 5th rounder
Robidas for 6th rounder
Clarkson for 5th (eat 2 million per year of contract)

Step  5 do the Burkey

Salary would be going out (after you trade away UFAs); not much would be coming back in. So teams like Montreal or Minnesota that are up against the cap; take a player with salary aka Josh Harding, Jacob Markstrom, Peter Budaj or a Bryan Allen. They are buried in the AHL; if you could get back a 3rd rounder for doing them a favor; it’s an asset you didn't have before.

Worst Goalies in NHL History #2

Back up popular demand the worst goalies in NHL history 2. Unlike the original article  http://corbyshockeycentral.blogspot.ca/2011/04/who-is-nhls-worst-ever-goaltender.html these four netminders had allot more brief careers in the NHL; an average of 2 season per goalie.

Michel Belhumeur started his career decently with the Philadelphia Flyers going 9-7-3 with a respectable 3.22 g.a.a. He unfortunately was then claimed by the expansion Washington Capitals. He went onto to play 42 times for the Capitals going 0-29-4; in his two seasons he had a 5.36 & 5.09 g.a.a. He completed his career spending 4 years in the minors; never to have a better g.a.a. than 3.56

Gary Laskoski played 5 years in hockey. His first two years he played college hockey with the St.Lawerence University; he signed then as a free agent with the LA Kings in 1982. In the 82-83 season he has alright going 15-20-4 with a 4.56 g.a.a and 857%. But the following season 83-84 he went 4-7-1 with a 4.96 g.a.a. and a horrifying 829%. The same year he was then sent down to the AHL after that accumulating a 4.94 g.a.a. He was never heard from in hockey after that year.

Going back over 70 years ago, there was a goalie for the New York Rangers name Ken McAuley. He struggled in his rookie season going 6-39-5 with a startling 6.24 g.a.a In his 2nd season with the Rangers it was slightly better going 11-25-10 with a 4.93 g.a.a.

More recently veteran Finnish goalie Jarmo Myllys played 16 seasons in the Finnish Elite League. In between his two stops had a couple of brief stints with the North Stars and a half season with the San Jose Sharks. His NHL numbers were some of the worst of all time; going 4-27-1 with a less-than sparkling 5.23 g.a.a  and a 859%.

Unforgettable deadline deals (2004-2010)

There are loads of unforgettable trades from the NHL trade deadline. Some of these trades helped teams win a Stanley Cup; while others have haunted teams since. Butch Goring being acquired by the Islanders put them over the hump; and it only cost them Dave Lewis & Billy Harris. Visa Versa; the Penguins trading Markus Naslund to Vancouver for Alex Stojanov. Lets have a look back at memorable trades over the last 10 NHL trade deadlines.

Canes load up with vets
One month before the deadline the Hurricanes got centerman Doug Weight from the St. Louis Blues along with Erkki Rajamaki in exchange they gave up Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis and Magnus Kahnberg. The three players the Blues got in return played 14 games that season and then they all moved on elsewhere.
Later at the deadline the Canes obtained Mark Recchi for Niklas Nordgren, Krys Kolanos & 2nd round pick (Kevin Marshall). Hurricanes history was made shortly after as they won their first Stanley Cup; with both vets playing enormous roles in the Championship run.

Bruins make two steals in back to back years
In 2009; the same Mark Recchi was traded with a 2nd round pick to the Bruins in exchange for prospects Matt Lashoff & Martin Karsums. Lashoff was traded the next summer, while Karsums played 18 games in Tampa.
In 2010, one of the more lopsided trades in years. The Bruins picked up Dennis Seidenberg & Matt Bartkowski from the Panthers for Craig Weller (0 NHL games), Byron Bitz (7 games with Flo) & a 2nd round pick.
The Bruins of course went onto win the Stanley Cup. Could they have done so without Recchi & Seidenberg; we'll never know. Seidenberg to this day is the Zdeno Chara's partner in crime on the back end.
Mr. Game 7 acquired
None other than Justin Williams was acquired by the Kings on March 4, 2009 in exchange they gave up Patrick O'Sullivan & a 2nd rounder (Brian Dumoulin). O'Sullivan was moved later on that day for Erik Cole. Williams has since won two Stanley Cups with LA; and also was the 2014 playoff MVP.
Veteran for draft pick
In 2004, Chicago traded veteran Alexander Karpovtsev to the Islanders for a 4th rounder. In the 2004 draft the Hawks selected defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson whom is considered to be one of the premier stay at home re-guards. Karpovtsev suited up three times for the Isles that year.
In the same deadline day, 2004; Carolina traded legend center Ron Francis to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 4th round pick. With the Leafs Francis got 10 points in 12 games.

Five lopsided trades from 2013 NHL trade deadline

The NHL trade deadline. The last day of the year a General Manager can make moves to ensure his team is a contender for Lord Stanley; and/or move assets of which are set to become a UFA.
Once maybe twice at each deadline; one can look back and ask themselves what were they thinking.  The week leading up to April 3, 2013 left hockey people scratching there heads on many fronts.

How desperate were you?
It started March 25, 2013 Pittsburgh and San Jose made the following trade. Penguins surrendered (2) 2nd rounders for rugged defenseman Douglas Murray. A hefty price for the Penguins to pay. Murray played 29 games (14 regular season, 15 playoff games) never was the physical presence like in San Jose. San Jose used both 2nd rounders to move up in the 2013 draft.
Eight days later the Sharks moved another pending UFA Ryan Clowe to the Rangers for a 2nd, 3rd & 5th round picks. After playing 12 regular season games & 2 playoff games for the Rangers, Clowe signed with the cross town rivals New Jersey Devils.
So to recap..... Murray & Clowe were UFA's at years end; and in moving them both to the east; the Sharks obtained (3) 2nd rounders, (1) 3rd rounder and (1) fifth rounder.

Prime example of selling for the right price
Washington was in a buying mode looking for a winger for Ovechkin & Backstrom. In Nashville they were not in selling mode; but looking to add prospects if the right deal came around. The Caps acquired Martin Erat & Michael Latta in exchange for Filip Forsberg.
This year in Forsberg’s rookie season, the Swede has 48 points in 53 games and is considered one of the best young players in the NHL. Erat on the other hand went onto score TWO times in 63 games played with the Capitals before being moved to Arizona.

Your scouts seen what in who?
At the time Ottawa had three goalies; without question number one goalie Craig Anderson; top prospect Robin Lehner and a good quality backup in Ben Bishop; who was scheduled to be a UFA at years end. There was no point in hanging onto Bishop; & Tampa was looking for an upgrade in net. The Lightning acquired Bishop for a 4th rounder and a speedster in Cory Conacher. Bishop since has become one of the leagues top goalies. Conacher in 72 games with Ottawa scored 4 goals before being put on waivers.

How bad do you want to get rid of him?
In 2013 the Carolina Hurricanes wanted to get rid of Jussi Jokinen in a bad way. He went unclaimed off of waivers; and finally at the deadline; the Penguins did the Canes a favor. In exchange for a conditional 7th rounder; the Pens got Jokinen but it didn't stop there. The Canes also agreed to pay for 50% of his remaining salary. The following season Jokinen scores 21 times & gets 57 points for the Penguins

NJ Devils soon to become sellers

It’s pretty much common knowledge of who some of the sellers are going to be at this years trade deadline. Phoenix, Buffalo, Toronto, Edmonton and Carolina; but one team that does have allot of desirable veterans will be the New Jersey Devils.  As of today the Devils are 12 points out of the 2nd wildcard; less than 24 hours  after losing 2-1 to the Oilers hopes is quickly going away. The Devils are one of the older teams in the league; they have allot of young defenseman but very prospects up front.
Jagr
Most teams are said to be after Yotes center Antoine Vermette; but it could come with a hefty price tag of a 1st rounder with a top prospect. I’d look at the top teams in the East (Bruins, Habs, Penguins) to turn their attention to the legendary Jaromir Jagr. His price tag would not be as high, but should be considered just as if not more valuable to those teams.
Jagr’s desire to leave New Jersey should not be questioned, he was a huge supporter of now ex coach Peter Deboer. “That would be one of the biggest mistakes they could make,”Jagr said on Dec 15 before Deboer was axed. “To be honest with you, without our coaches and the system we play, it would be a lot worse.”
Marek Zidlicky
For teams that either lose out on or don’t pay the hefty price for Franson, Sekara or Hejda; they likely will take a long look at Zidlicky. He’s still an offensive minded defenseman who at times can quarterback the first PP unit. He should be in the bottom pairing of defense, but can easily play top 4 minutes if required.  He could be acquired for a late 2nd/ early 3rd rounder or a B level prospect.
Michael Ryder
Ryder is a veteran who has been through the Stanley Cup wars; could be very useful to a team looking for some depth up front, and could very easily play the 2nd unit PP.
He has been in the doghouse in New Jersey; so one could assume he could be had for a 4th rounder or less. He has a cap friendly 3.5 million (if acquired at the deadline would be less than 1.5 million). He also has 18 playoff goals in 57 games, so fair to say he doesn't disappear come the 2nd season.
Other vets could be had for right price
Steve Bernier would be a perfect fit on many 4th lines; he was also a key veteran when the Devils went to the Cup finals 3 years ago. At 600k, you’d be adding less than 250k to the teams salary cap and in today's day and age; he adds some toughness as well.
Scott Gomez should attract some attention and at a very low asking price. Like Ryder could be used on the 2nd PP unit; allot of teams Jets, Bruins and Stars could use extra depth for the stretch run.
Less likely to move is Martin Havlat, the often injured European has a bigger cap hit at 1.5 million. Rest assured teams like San Jose & Minnesota will stay free and clear of Havlat; they have been there and done that.
If Lou is willing to eat some salary
If and only if the Devils are willing to eat some salary they might be able to move Danius Zubrus (1 yr @3.1 million) & Tuomo Ruutu (1 yr 3.8 million cap hit). Both are useful 3rd liners on an average team looking to add some size. One would assume if the Devils were to eat some salary the price would go up slightly (4th or 5th rounder). The other trade option would be if the Devils were to take back a bad contract (but the player would need to be younger).

Will "Chevy" make moves this year around; Jets need more depth

On March 5, 2014 Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff did nothing on trade deadline day 2014 to help his team.  He basically threw in the towel, this after centerman Mark Scheifele suffered a season ending injury. We are less than 1 month away from the 2015 trade deadline; and the Jets are in a much better spot this year compared to last; up 8 points on the Kings, Wild & Stars.
Chevy has to prove to not only his players but to the fans of Winnipeg that he can and will improve this team by trade. This has been his weakness throughout his career. With all due respect they need more than a  Angelo Esposito for Kenndal McArdle or Maxime Macenauer for John Negrin trade.
The Evander Kane saga must become an after thought. There is a small and I mean small percentage that they can move him at the deadline, he is lost for the year no two ways about it. They could use a top six forward, but to say the least they must get one, maybe two top nine forwards.
The Jets cannot win a round in the playoffs if Chris Thornburn is on their third line. Same can be said in regards to their 4th line;  TJ Galiardi who has been put on waivers twice to go unclaimed by all 29 other teams has 1 goal in 36 games played having a team worst -6. And despite being a fan, Paul Maurice clearly does not have a load of confidence in Anthony Peluso to play more than 5 minutes each night. Furthermore the team has no faith in anyone in the farm system to be of any help.
So the Jets can go many ways in order to add some much needed depth.
Earlier in the year the Jets acquired Jay Harrison from Carolina; a player Jets coach Paul Maurice had in three different spots. Could the Jets look back to the Canes for a forward like Patrick Dwyer a cap friendly 900k; Maurice had him for four seasons. Same could be said for Dwyers teammate Jiri Tlusty; who like the Jets Michael Frolik could be a 2nd or 3rd line forward. Others players the Jets could get for nothing more than a 5th or 6th rounder, Torrey Mithell and or David Moss.
Do not expect the team to add huge amounts of salary at the deadline nor be open to move any prospects. One player who could be moved for more help up front is spare defensman Paul Postma.

But many people in and out of Winnipeg have said, soon the novelty will wear off so waiting another year or so to make the playoffs are out the of question.
