Despite missing their two best players Tore Vikingstad and Mats Zuccarello, team Norway pulled off the biggest win in that country’s history today, as they beat Sweden 5-4 in a shootout. Goaltender Lars Haugen was the star for Norway making 42 saves, plus 2 saves in the shootout, while forwards PA Skroder, Anders Bastiansen, Morten Ask and Mathis Olimb all had two points in the win as well. On the other hand former LA King goalie Erik Ersberg allowed four goals on 20 shots.
Specialty teams were huge, Norway went 3-5 on the powerplay, while killing a huge penalty by Skroder in overtime. “I think when we got the second goal, that’s when we felt we could score again,” said former NHLer Ole-Kristian Tollefson. “This is the best.”
How big is this win?
If Norway can either tie or beat Austria on May 4th, they would be guaranteed to avoid relegation from the World Championships. While some of you are saying big deal, for teams like Norway its almost like winning a medal.
